Sunset Canyon in Rise of Kingdoms (2026): Best Commanders, Formations and Shop

Information is current as of August 2026.

Sunset Canyon is a daily PvP arena in Rise of Kingdoms where your five marches fight another player's five marches in automatic battle. You can't control troops manually: everything is decided by the composition, formation and commanders you set up in advance. In return, the rewards are among the most useful in the game: the Canyon shop is the main source of epic equipment blueprints (the famous Gatekeeper's Shield) and sculptures. Let's break down how to build a team and climb the rankings.

How the Mode Works

You field up to five marches on a two-line grid: the front line takes the damage, the back line deals it. The battle runs automatically, with skills firing as rage accumulates. The team that destroys all enemy marches wins. You get five attack attempts daily; the ranking updates after battles, and rewards drop daily and weekly — Canyon coins that are spent in the special shop.

The key difference from field battles: there is no dodging, kiting or manual focus here. That's why skill values are reshuffled — area-of-effect damage, debuffs and front-line survivability come first.

Team-Building Principles

  1. Front line — tanks. Two or three march "sponges" with defense and health that absorb the hit while the back line works;
  2. Back line — AoE. Commanders with multi-target damage go here: their skills cover the entire enemy team, including the back rows;
  3. Center — the most massive damage. Place your AoE commander in the central position so their fan reliably hits the maximum number of marches;
  4. Debuffs beat "pure" damage. Silence, attack and defense reduction work at full power in auto-battle — the enemy won't dodge;
  5. No mixed troops. Each march is built as a single troop type for its commander.

Best Commanders for the Canyon

Area-of-Effect Damage (Back Line)

  • Yi Seong-Gye (YSG) — the king of the Canyon: circular damage to up to 5 targets covers the entire enemy team, including the back line. Place strictly in the center;
  • Mehmed II — the same fan-damage mechanic, slightly weaker than YSG, but works with any troop type;
  • Baibars — the epic version of the same profile: a damage factor of 1000 across 3–5 marches, an excellent substitute for legendaries;
  • Sun Tzu — the Canyon's dark horse: with the right talent branch and rage refund he casts his active skill every 3–4 seconds and catches up with legendaries in total damage. And he's leveled with tomes;
  • Zhuge Liang — in the current meta, one of the best Canyon nukers, especially paired with Hermann Prime.

Front Line (Tanks)

  • Richard I and Charles Martel — the classic "wall": incoming damage reduction and shields give the back line time to cast;
  • Kusunoki Masashige — a budget tank with a bonus: he cleanses debuffs and deals area damage himself, perfect as the second man behind a tank;
  • Gorgo and Zenobia — late-game meta tanks with damage-reduction stacks.

A Typical Team for a Mid-Tier Account

Front line: Richard I, Charles Martel (or Kusunoki + Eulji on a budget). Back line: Sun Tzu (center), Yi Seong-Gye, Baibars/Mehmed. Such a five is assembled without "whale" commanders and holds steadily in the upper part of an average server's ranking.

The Canyon Shop: What to Buy

Coin spending priority: epic equipment blueprints for your main march (the Gatekeeper's Shield for infantry is a must), then sculptures of key commanders and materials. Don't waste coins on resources and speedups — you can farm those elsewhere, while the blueprints here are unique.

Community Opinions

Players on the forums agree: "The Canyon is the only place where epics beat legendaries: a fully leveled Sun Tzu in the center regularly wipes teams with half-baked legendary marches." Veterans advise not to be lazy about changing your formation for a specific opponent: "See the enemy's thin front line — move your AoE to the center, you'll break through in two casts." And another frequent piece of advice from Reddit: "Do all five daily attacks, even against strong opponents: the activity rewards pay for the defeats, and you'll win the rating back."

Common Mistakes

  • Fielding farm marches and gathering commanders in the Canyon — that's minus two slots right away;
  • Placing an AoE commander on the edge — the fan covers half the enemy team instead of all of it;
  • Building a front line from "semi-attacking" marches — either tank or damage, there's no middle ground here;
  • Ignoring daily battles — a skipped day means lost coins and rating;
  • Forgetting to update the defensive formation as your commanders grow.

Five minutes a day on the Canyon means a steady flow of blueprints and sculptures that move your account forward faster than any donation. Set up the team once using this guide — and let it work for you.
