Valorant Guide: Agents, Modes, Ranks and Esports

Valorant is a tactical first-person shooter from Riot Games, released on June 2, 2020 and, in less than a year, becoming one of the world's most popular competitive titles. Over 20 million people launch the game every month, and its Champions tournament sells out stadiums with multi-million-dollar prize pools. In this guide we cover everything a newcomer needs to know: how the gameplay works, who the agents are, what modes exist and where to start.

What is Valorant

Valorant is a 5v5 team shooter where one side defends sites and the other tries to plant a Spike device. Rounds are short, first to 13 wins, with overtime possible after 12:12. Like classic tactical shooters, there's an economy: kills and round wins earn credits you spend on weapons and shields.

The main feature of Valorant is agents with unique abilities. Instead of identical fighters you pick a character from four classes:

• Duelists — offensive agents for first entries and trades (Jett, Reyna, Phoenix);
• Initiators — help the team clear enemies off positions (Sova, Fade, Breach);
• Controllers — cut off vision with smokes and area denial (Omen, Viper, Astra);
• Sentinels — hold positions and protect flanks (Sage, Cypher, Killjoy).

There are over 25 agents to choose from, each with four abilities: a purchasable basic, a free signature, and an ultimate that charges through kills and actions in rounds.

• 128-tick servers — hit registration is as fair as possible, which is critical for competitive play;
• Vanguard anti-cheat — runs at the kernel level and is considered one of the strictest in the industry;

Game modes

Valorant has about a dozen modes for every taste:

• Competitive — classic 5v5 with ranking and economy;
• Unrated — the same mode without rank consequences;
• Swiftplay — shortened matches to 5 wins;
• Escalation and Team Deathmatch — warmup modes without economy;
• Spike Rush — short rounds with random weapons;
• Premier — a tournament mode for organized teams with seasons and playoffs.

The ranking system

Competitive mode uses a ladder of eight ranks: from Iron to Radiant. Key tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Immortal and Radiant — the last one reserved for the top 500 players of the region. Each rank is split into three divisions, and after placement matches you receive your starting rank.

Valorant esports

Riot Games built a full tournament ecosystem around the game — the VCT (Valorant Champions Tour): regional leagues, Masters events and the Champions world championship with millions of dollars in prizes. The pro scene streams live year-round and regularly draws hundreds of thousands of viewers — one of the biggest esports titles alongside CS 2 and League of Legends.

Where a newcomer should start

1. Make sure your PC meets the system requirements — the game is very kind to hardware.

3. Complete the tutorial and play a few bot matches to understand the economy and agent abilities.
