Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) is a free tactical first-person shooter developed and published by Valve. Two teams - special forces (CT) and terrorists (T) - fight in short rounds: some plant a bomb or hold hostages, others interfere with them. The game is out September 27, 2023, replacing the legendary CS:GO, and runs on the Source 2 engine. It is a direct descendant of the 1999 Counter-Strike modification for Half-Life, a series that defined the competitive shooter genre.
How popular: numbers
CS2 - most played game on steam, and maintains this status for the third year in a row. According to Steam as of August 2026:
- ~830,000 players simultaneously on average over the last 30 days;
- daily peaks - 1.1–1.3 million players;
- historical record - 1,862,531 concurrent players (April 12, 2025);
- more 210 million registered accounts and about 20 million active players per month;
- Russia is the No. 1 country in terms of the share of players: Approximately 16% of the global CS2 audience.

Counter-Strike is one of the most profitable games in history: the entire series earned Valve more than $6.7 billion, and CS2 alone in 2025 brought about$1.16 billion — mainly due to the sale of keys to cases (~$800 million) and commissions from the Steam Marketplace.
