Roblox Studio: how to create your own game from scratch

Information is current as of August 2026.

Roblox is not only games, but also a full-fledged platform for creating them. The free editor Roblox Studio allows you to build your own world, program mechanics and publish the game for millions of players - and successful projects bring real income to the authors in Robux. Let's look at the path from installation to publication.

Step 1: Install Roblox Studio

Roblox Studio can be downloaded for free from the official Roblox website (Create → Start Creating button). The editor works on Windows and Mac—you cannot create games on your phone. Once installed, log into your Roblox account.

Step 2: Get familiar with the interface

Start with a template: Baseplate is an empty area, Obby is a ready-made obstacle course that can be remade. Main editor windows:

  • Viewport- your 3D world;
  • Explorer— list of all scene objects;
  • Properties— settings of the selected object;
  • Toolbox— library of ready-made models and materials;
  • Script Editor— scripts are written here in the Lua language.

Step 3: Build the World

Don't start with the details - first sketch out a rough layout of simple blocks: starting area, playing area, goal. This approach is called greyboxing and saves you from rework when you want to change the level structure. Build modularly: build a platform or wall section once and multiply in copies. Place spawn checkpoints right away - nothing irritates players more than losing all their progress.

Step 4. Add mechanics in Lua

All logic in Roblox is written in Lua, one of the most beginner-friendly languages. Start with simple things: points for touching an object, opening doors, teleports. Key concepts to learn before others:

  • Script and LocalScript— the first one works on the server, the second one on the player’s device; confusion between them is the main source of mistakes for beginners;
  • RemoteEvents— communication between client and server (purchases, rewards);
  • Leaderstats— built-in system of points, currency and leaderboards.

Step 5: Test the game

The editor has testing modes: Play - single test, Run - server simulation, Team Test - several players at the same time. Then post the game as private and invite 3-5 friends to see where they get stuck and where they get stuck - this is the most honest feedback. Fix bugs with small updates.

Step 6: Publish and Promote

  1. In Roblox Studio: File → Publish to Roblox, specify the name, description and a bright thumbnail - this is what decides whether your game will be clicked on.
  2. Set the visibility to "Public".
  3. Make short videos for TikTok and YouTube Shorts, share the game in developer communities - it's free and effective.

How to make money on your game

  • Game Passes— one-time purchases of permanent benefits: double speed, access to exclusive areas;
  • Developer Products— recurring purchases: sets of in-game currency, boosts;
  • Payouts while playing— the platform pays for the time that subscribers spend in your game.

Golden rule: Sell convenience, not victory - the pay-to-win model is quickly killing the game's community. The authors withdraw the accumulated robux through the DevEx program, but it requires a game with a real audience. Read about other honest ways to get robux in a separate article.
