Lighting and camouflage in World of Tanks: how the detection system works (2026)

Information is current as of August 2026.

“They killed me out of nowhere!” - the most mysterious and most discussed mechanics of World of Tanks. The detection system works according to clear rules, but the game does not explain them - hence the year-long disputes, myths and “twists”. We analyzed the official mechanics of exposure and camouflage: where you can be seen, how bushes work, why “fireflies” decide the outcome of the battle, and how to stop dying “from the void.”

How detection works

Each tank has two viewpoints (original “eyes” - on the turret and on the hull) and dimensional points, by which you can be noticed. Invisible rays stretch from viewpoints to other dimensional points: if at least one ray reaches it, the enemy is exposed. Checks occur in ticks: close every 0.1 seconds, at maximum distance - every 0.8. Therefore, you can “flash” behind a house, but you cannot “drive quickly across an open field.”

Three key numbers you need to know by heart:

  • 445 meters — maximum detection distance. No one sees further, no matter what the review. The extra meters of view above 445 are not lost: they enhance the detection of camouflaged targets.
  • 564 meters — rendering range: you see enemies illuminated by your allies and shoot at them at this distance.
  • 50 meters - “X-ray”: at this distance, tanks always see each other, through walls and bushes.

An illuminated tank is not visible instantly and not forever

After illumination, the target remains visible for about 10 seconds (from 8 to 16 depending on equipment and skills), even if she hid again or the scout died. Practical conclusion: gone out of sight - count to ten before considering yourself invisible. It is these “burnt out” seconds that create the feeling of “I was killed out of nowhere”: you were exposed earlier, and killed when you already thought that you had escaped.

Bushes: how it really works

Bushes are the main camouflage tool and the main source of confusion. The rules are simple, but not obvious:

  • Bushes fold: standing for bush (15 meters from it and further), you get its camouflage, themselves see through it normally; standing in bush, you disguise yourself worse and see worse.
  • When you shoot all bushes within a radius of 15 metersstop working, except for the densest ones. Hence the classic “cursed” shots from behind a bush - shoot, rolling away so that the bush is between you and the enemy, more than 15 meters away from you.
  • Trees are camouflaged both standing and fallen - if you felled a tree, you got an additional “bush”.

Player reviews: frequent pain

1. “They shine from nowhere.” Top 1 complaint from newbies. The reason is almost always the same: the enemy has a “firefly” with 445+ vision and camouflage, who sees you first. It can be treated by knowing the standard positions of scouts on each map and the rule: if the light is not on and they are shooting at you, you have been spotted from afar, look for cover and not the source of the shots.

2. “I stood in the bushes and immediately died.” A bush without a distance does not help: at point-blank range (50 meters) the “X-ray” works, and after the shot the bushes around you “fall off”.

3. Hatred of wheelers. The EBR 105 with its speed jumps between review ticks and shines on the whole team - the most discussed “firefly” of recent years. The antidote from the comments: do not go out into the open in the first minutes and guard the routes of the wheeled vehicles.

Analysis of comments: main conclusions

First: information wins the battle: a team with a living scout sees the map, but without one, it goes blind; therefore, the assistance statistics per battle for top LTs is comparable to the damage of damage dealers. Second: “sixth sense” is your main device: the lamp has worked - you have been glowing for several seconds (signal delay), urgently change your position. Third: camouflage consists of everything: crew skill, mask network, optics, bushes, terrain and discipline (“don’t shoot unnecessarily”) - individually they are weak, together they make you invisible. And most importantly: the flash mechanic is the only “cheating” legal force in the game; the one who understands it wins battles before the first shot.
