SCP: Secret Laboratory guide: roles, SCP-914 and victory
SCP: Secret Laboratory is a free multiplayer horror game by Northwood Studios: a team-based showdown where humans face SCP objects and each other. Every round begins with a containment breach: some must escape, others must let no one out. The game is available on Steam. This guide covers roles, the key SCP-914 mechanic and victory conditions for each side.
Roles: goals and starting gear
| Role | Goal | Starting gear |
|---|---|---|
| Class-D personnel | Escape; allied with the Chaos Insurgency | Nothing; a rescued Class-D becomes an MTF cadet |
| Scientist | Escape; helped by guards and MTF | Scientist key card, medkit |
| Facility guard | Rescue scientists, contain the breach | Carbine, guard card, body armor |
| MTF "Nine-Tailed Fox" | Evacuate scientists, clear the facility | Epsilon-11 rifle, weapon tablet, handcuffs |
| Chaos Insurgency | Extract Class-D, eliminate everyone else | Logicer machine gun, door hacking device |
| SCP objects | Let no one living escape | Unique abilities per object |

SCP-914: the main upgrade machine
The machine in the heavy zone upgrades cards and gear along the "rough — 1:1 — fine — very fine" chain. Key recipes:
- Scientist card: 1:1 — zone manager card, fine — senior scientist card, very fine — MTF commander card.
- Guard card: fine — MTF lieutenant card, very fine — O5 card with access almost everywhere.
- Weapons: basic pistols become stronger on "fine"; sniper rifles improve on "very fine".
- Caution: on "very fine" an item can be destroyed or explode — never gamble your last card.
Round victory conditions
| Outcome | Conditions |
|---|---|
| Foundation victory | Scientists evacuated, SCPs and escaping Class-D neutralized |
| Chaos victory | Class-D extracted, no scientist escapes, guards and MTF dead |
| SCP victory | No human escaped, MTF and guards eliminated |
| Stalemate | Both Class-D and scientists escaped; the round ends with a survivors' epilogue |
If a fight drags on, the warhead activates: the facility has limited time to evacuate to the surface.
How to play as an SCP
- SCP-173: snap necks when nobody looks; herd victims into tight rooms.
- SCP-106: drag people into the pocket dimension through the floor; control elevators and Tesla gates.
- SCP-096: provoke looks and shred corridors; watch your cry so you do not reveal your position early.
- SCP-049: "cure" corpses — they become zombies. A pack decides fights.
- SCP-939: invisible while motionless, sees only sound: hunt the noisy ones.
Tips
- Newcomers should pick guard or MTF: gear decides fights immediately and the goals are simple.
- The zone manager card spawns in heavy-zone lockers — it is your pass to SCP-914.
- Close doors behind you: delaying a pursuer matters more than running speed.
- Class-D: run during the light zone before decontamination — the timer is merciless.
- Listen to the intercom: teams often broadcast coordinates and plans.
