Information current as of August 2026.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is the long-awaited sequel to the legendary Ukrainian series from GSC Game World. This open-world shooter set in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone was released on November 20, 2024, for PC and Xbox Series X|S (and later for PS5) and became one of the biggest gaming events of the decade. The Zone is back: anomalies, artifacts, mutants, Stalker factions, and the unique atmosphere that has made the series beloved around the world.
Game Description
The action takes place in an alternate Chernobyl Exclusion Zone following the second disaster at the nuclear power plant. The player is Skif, a stalker—one of thousands of adventurers who have ventured into the Zone in search of artifacts and loot. Across 64 square kilometers of a seamless open world—from the Red Forest to Pripyat and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant itself—a nonlinear story unfolds with multiple endings, where every decision affects the fate of the Zone.
- Engine: Unreal Engine 5—photogrammetry, realistic lighting, weather effects.
- World: 64 km² of seamless Zone, dynamic radiation emissions, A-Life 2.0 simulation.
- Gameplay: First-person shooter with survival elements: hunger, radiation, bleeding, weapon repairs.
- Modes: A single-player campaign lasting 40+ hours with branching paths and multiple endings.
Reviews and Ratings
The game received mostly positive reviews: critics praised the atmosphere, visuals, and fidelity to the spirit of the original, while criticizing its technical state at launch. After a series of major patches in 2025–2026 (including the A-Life 2.0 update and optimizations), the ratings improved significantly.
- Metacritic: 73–78 (PC) at launch; the “user” rating increased after the patches.
- Steam: “Very Positive” reviews, over 85% positive ratings.
- Players note: the best atmosphere in the Zone since *Shadow of Chernobyl*, excellent sound design, and a great soundtrack.

Sales and Popularity
In the first few days after release, the game sold over 1 million copies, and including Game Pass subscribers, the player base exceeded 6 million in the first month. The most active player base is in Eastern Europe (Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic), Germany, the U.S., and the CIS countries; the game unexpectedly gained significant popularity in Japan and South Korea after the release of the PS5 version.
Factions of the Zone
Factions are the heart and soul of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. In the second installment, the following factions returned and were updated:
- Lone Wolves (Free Stalkers)—neutral artifact hunters.
- “Duty”—a militarized faction whose goal is to destroy the Zone.
- “Freedom”—anarchists who view the Zone as a gift to humanity.
- Bandits, mercenaries, military forces, and the mysterious “Monolith”/“Nemesis.”
- New factions: “Spark” and other groups that emerged after the events of the original trilogy.
Artifacts and Anomalies
Hunting for artifacts is the foundation of a stalker’s economy. Detectors of various classes (“Echo,” “Veles,” “Svarog”) allow you to find increasingly rare artifacts that grant bonuses to defense, regeneration, or radiation resistance. Emissions—periodic deadly cataclysms in the Zone: when you hear the siren, run to the nearest shelter.

Tips for Newcomers to the Zone
- Bolts are your best friend: throw them at suspicious spots to detect anomalies.
- Stock up on detectors: you won’t find valuable artifacts without a good detector.
- Have your weapons repaired by technicians—a jammed barrel is deadly in a firefight.
- Save your game before every emission and before entering lab dungeons.
- Don’t carry everything with you—use the storage lockers at the bases.
