S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl — complete Zone survival guide (2026)
This information is current as of August 2026.
The Exclusion Zone does not forgive mistakes. To survive in the harsh world of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, it’s not enough to just shoot accurately—you need to understand the game mechanics, know the valuable locations, and be able to manage your resources wisely. This guide compiles key tips to help newcomers and serve as a refresher for veterans of the series.
First Steps: What You Need to Know Right from the Start
Save Properly
Make a separate save before every transition between locations. Given the game’s instability at the start, it’s better to be safe than sorry—this will protect you from a potential soft lock and loss of progress.
How to Speed Up Loading Times
Long shader load times are a well-known issue. There are ways to fix this that you can find in the community, but remember: any modifications to the game files are done at your own risk.
What to Bring on a Trip: The Ideal Inventory
The optimal set for a trip into the Zone looks like this:
| Item | Quantity | Note |
|---|---|---|
| First-aid kits | 10 | Minimum survival supply |
| Bandages | 10 | Stop bleeding |
| Canned food | 3 cans | It’s hard to starve to death, but it’s better to be safe than sorry |
| Pills (all types) | 2–3 | Protection against radiation and other effects |
| Pistol ammunition | 100+ | The Scythe pistol is incredibly effective |
| Ammo for primary weapons | 300–500 | Depends on your accuracy and caliber |
| Ammo for the shotgun | ~80 | For close combat |
Weapons—Choosing the Right One
The Scythian Pistol is a hidden game-breaker. For some reason, it deals absurd damage, and it’s impossible to knock it out of your hands. This makes it the perfect weapon for fighting bureaucrats. Equip it with all the upgrades, a silencer, and an extended magazine—you can find all of these in the very first location.
- You can equip an UZI in the pistol slot—this discovery makes the pistol slot much more useful.
- Primary weapon: Choose a versatile platform like an AK or M4 for medium and long ranges. A scope and an underbarrel grenade launcher won’t go amiss.
- Shotgun: Opt for semi-automatic or automatic models with a large magazine—enemies won’t wait for you to reload.
- Underbarrel attachments don’t break—a great bonus for frugal stalkers. An underbarrel shotgun is especially valuable, as it can fully replace your primary weapon.
- Headshots: At high difficulty levels, damage is critical, so a sniper rifle with a scope is a must-have.
Stamina and Movement
To run for long periods, you need good stamina regeneration and no overload. The secret to fast regeneration is the “Thunderberry” artifact, which appears in electrical anomalies. Equipped with these artifacts, you’ll be able to restore stamina in 2–4 seconds. Energy drinks and water will also help.
Artifacts for Beginners
In the early game, it’s important to get a good suit with artifact slots. The PSZ-12V “Bulat” suit is one of the best options to start with. It’s located at the western checkpoint in the Small Zone, which unlocks after completing the “Behind Seven Seals” quest. The door code is 0690.
Four Artifacts for a Starting Build
| Artifact | Effect | Where to Find |
|---|---|---|
| “Strange Ball” | Reduces damage from bullets when standing still | The “Bulba” Anomaly east of Zalesye |
| "Whirlwind" | Physical Defense + Stamina | Gravitational Anomalies |
| "Sapphire" | Stamina + Bleeding Resistance | Electrical Anomalies |
| "Hedgehog" | Radiation Protection (No Penalties) | Acid anomalies |
This combination provides versatile stat bonuses without significant penalties. “Whirlwind” and “Pebble” are interchangeable, as are “Hedgehog” and “Bubble.”
The Zone’s Economy: How Not to Run Out of Money
Where to Sell for More
Pay attention to the map: if a merchant’s icon is highlighted in green, there’s a chance you’ll get a good price. Check each item manually: even bandages can cost different amounts at different merchants. The only merchant who buys damaged weapons is located in Rostok, in the former transformer station.
What to Keep in Stock
- Artifacts—don’t sell your last one: you might run into a quest to find it, and you’ll already have the item you need.
- Rare barrels (like the “Vintar”)—even in poor condition, they can come in handy for a quest from Sidorovich, who doesn’t care about the weapon’s durability.
Where to store loot
If you’re too overloaded to move, leave your items in the nearest backpack and mark it on your PDA (TAB key). Don’t forget to come back later—who knows who else might stumble upon your treasures.
Suits and Gear
For any outfit, you should prioritize upgrading:
- Durability.
- Physical Defense.
- Number of artifact slots.
Scientific suits offer better protection against anomalies and, according to rumors, wear out more slowly in areas of anomalous activity. Exoskeletons provide the most artifact slots, but jumping while wearing them consumes more stamina. Upgrading the “lead walls” for containers completely neutralizes radiation from artifacts—the slot will be highlighted in green.
Secrets and Easter Eggs in the Zone
- “You should’ve collected some more tin cans”—go to Sidorovich’s bunker, open the locker, and you’ll see a mountain of rusty cans.
- Fresh bread—at the bakery in Rostok, talk to Kirpich and wait your turn in line.
- A bonfire from Dark Souls—southeast of the “Burnt Forest” region, on the riverbank, next to a sword stuck in the ground.
- Main menu from Shadow of Chernobyl—northwest of “Gradiren.”
- Reference to *Alien*—In the southwestern part of *Zatona*, find a corpse with a growth protruding from its chest.
- Wilhelm’s Scream—in the “Tornado” anomaly on “Yanov,” an NPC will make the iconic sound before dying.
- Containers with zombies from Resident Evil—code 2777 near the unfinished pipe at “Gradirny.”
Unique Weapons: Where to Find Them
| Weapons | Type | Location |
|---|---|---|
| AR416 belonging to an unknown stalker | Assault rifle | Poppy Field (quest “Poppy Field,” hand in the icon to Pomor) |
| SOFMOD | Assault Rifle | Zaton, service station building |
| Plevalka | Submachine Gun | Dump, from Sani Bodryak’s body (the “Fat Profit” quest) |
| Checkmate | Submachine gun | Shah’s Stash at the Dump (quest “Gangster Rampage”) |
For owners of the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions, journalists’ stashes containing exclusive weapons are available in various locations.
Good luck in the Zone, stalker! It’s not the strongest who survive here, but the best prepared. And don’t forget to save your game!
