War Thunder: Which Nation to Choose in 2026 — The Best Vehicles for Leveling Up

War Thunder: какую нацию выбрать в 2026 — лучшая техника для прокачки

War Thunder is the largest online military action game: over 2,500 vehicles from a dozen countries, ranging from biplanes to modern fighter jets and main battle tanks. The first and most important question for a new player is which nation to level up. Let’s break down the strengths of each faction and the best vehicles to start with in 2026.

In short: what a newbie should choose

If you don’t have time to read—go with the USSR or Germany for tanks and the US for aircraft. These branches have the most “forgiving” vehicles at lower ranks and a full range of vehicles for every situation. More details below.

USSR—Simplicity and Reliability

  • Tanks: The famous T-34 with sloped armor is the best choice for learning the game. High-explosive shells consistently one-shot enemies, the armor withstands hits, and the handling is decent;
  • Aircraft: Yak and La fighters—excellent speed and maneuverability at low altitudes, where most battles take place;
  • Cons: Limited vertical gun elevation; Soviet vehicles require experience at the highest tiers;
  • Key Vehicles: T-34 (1941), KV-1, T-34-85, IS-2.

Germany — Powerful Guns

  • Tanks: “Tigers” and “Panthers” can penetrate any target at their tier and beyond—learn to angle your hull, and you’ll become invulnerable;
  • Aircraft: The Bf 109—the gold standard for fighters with excellent rate of climb;
  • Weaknesses: The sides of heavy tanks are as thin as cardboard; even a slight positioning error is punished instantly;
  • Key Vehicles: Pz.IV F2, Tiger H1, Panther A, Bf 109 F-4.

USA—Versatility and Air Power

  • Tanks: “Shermans” with gun stabilizers—fire on the move while the enemy is locking onto you. Each vehicle is equipped with an anti-aircraft machine gun to defend against aircraft;
  • Air Force: The best branch in the game—the P-51 and F4U Corsair fighters carry massive payloads, while attack aircraft and bombers decide the outcome of mixed battles;
  • Cons: Average armor—rely on angles and the first shot;
  • Key Vehicles: M4A1 Sherman, M18 Hellcat, P-51D, F4U-4.

Other Nations — At a Glance

  • Britain: Tanks with excellent guns, but without high-explosive shells—you need to know the enemy’s weak spots. In aviation—maneuverable “Spitfires,” the benchmark for dogfights;
  • Japan: Light and nimble vehicles, the best-maneuvering fighters (Zero, Ki-43)—branches for aviation enthusiasts, not tank enthusiasts;
  • Italy, France, China, Sweden, Israel: interesting “secondary” branches. Of these, Sweden is the best choice for a beginner—powerful self-propelled guns and fast tanks with automatic loaders.

How to Level Up Effectively

  1. Level up one branch at a time—spreading yourself too thin slows your progress significantly;
  2. Fill your hangar: 3–4 vehicles of the same battle rating, not just one “favorite”—if you die first, the battle is over for you;
  3. Play Realistic Battles (RB) after you’ve mastered Arcade mode—you’ll earn significantly more experience and silver there;
  4. Daily missions and events are the main source of boosters, premium vehicles, and Golden Eagles;
  5. Don’t buy a top-tier premium tank right away: first, get some practice in Tiers III–IV; otherwise, the toughest battles will quickly put you off the game.
