The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was released on November 11, 2011—and in November 2026, the game will celebrate its 15th anniversary. Since then, it has sold over 65 million copies, seen a dozen re-releases, and become a major cultural phenomenon in the RPG genre. Surprisingly, playing Skyrim in 2026 isn’t just “something you do out of nostalgia”—it’s still one of the best role-playing games in history. Here’s why.

Why Skyrim Never Gets Old

The secret of Skyrim lies in its freedom. You emerge from a cave in Helgen, and the game sets you free: if you want, follow the main story; if you want, join the Thieves’ Guild, become an archmage, a werewolf, a vampire lord, or just chop wood and furnish your home. The world reacts to your decisions, and the map is dotted with hundreds of locations, each of which tells its own little story.

Add to that:

• one of the most recognizable musical themes in the gaming industry;
• "learn by doing" progression—want to be a mage in heavy armor with a bow? Go right ahead;
• dragons, shouts (even people who haven’t played know “Fus Ro Dah”), and the best dungeons in the series;
• three major DLCs: Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn.

Mods: the main reason to play right now

Skyrim is the most moddable game in history: there are over 100,000 mods on Nexus Mods, with total downloads exceeding a billion. On PC (and to some extent on consoles), you can transform this 2011 game into something almost modern: 2020s-level graphics, new combat animations, a fully Russian city mod, and hundreds of new quests.

Where to start as a beginner:

• Unofficial Skyrim Patch — fixes hundreds of bugs that Bethesda hasn’t fixed in 15 years;
• graphics packs (textures, lighting)—choose what suits your taste and graphics card;
• massive story-driven mods like Enderal—essentially a free standalone RPG built on the Skyrim engine.

And what about The Elder Scrolls 6?

In short: it’s still a long wait. The game was announced back at E3 2018; full-scale development is underway on the new Creation Engine 3; playable builds already exist—Todd Howard calls TES VI Bethesda’s “main focus.” However, according to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, the release is at least two years away, meaning a realistic release window is 2027–2028. Bethesda is deliberately not showing the game ahead of time: Howard dreams of a surprise release in the spirit of Oblivion Remastered (by the way, the Oblivion remaster came out in 2025 and is a great way to pass the time while waiting—we recommend it, too).

So Skyrim will remain relevant for at least another two years—and, considering the mods, probably forever.

Is Skyrim Worth Playing in 2026?

Yes, if you love open-world games and RPGs—this is a must-play classic that costs next to nothing on sale. Even if you already played it back in 2011, the Anniversary Edition with mods on PC is essentially a whole new game. And for those waiting for TES VI, Skyrim remains the best way to understand why this series is so beloved.
