PlayStation 6 remained without a date and price: the head of Sony admitted that the decision has not yet been made
The release date of the PlayStation 6 remains unknown even to Sony itself. The company's CEO Hiroki Totoki said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that neither the launch date nor the cost of the next-generation console have been determined yet. The final decision, according to available information, can be made only at the beginning of next year - immediately before the start of production.

Previously, insiders called the end of 2027 the most likely release window for the PS6, but after Totoki’s words, these plans no longer look guaranteed. Some industry experts allow the launch to be postponed to 2028.
What's stopping Sony from making a decision?
The main factor of uncertainty is the shortage and rising prices for memory: demand from AI infrastructure has grown sharply, and components are becoming more expensive. Sony has already made it clear that it is not going to sell the PS6 at a loss, so analysts expect a price significantly higher than the starting $499 for the PS5 - estimates reach $900–1000. It is significant that the PS5 Pro has already risen in price to $899.99 in April 2026.
At the same time, work on the console is ongoing: as part of the Amethyst project jointly with AMD, the companies showed the technologies Neural Arrays (AI graphics processing), Radiance Cores (hardware ray tracing units) and Universal Compression (new data compression), which could form the basis of the PS6.
Change of strategy
Totoki also said that Sony should gradually move away from the model where hardware plays a central role, and more actively develop the entertainment direction: turn game franchises into films and TV series and more closely integrate games with anime.
The current generation still has at least one more big reason to remain relevant - Grand Theft Auto VI is coming out in November.
