Marvel's Wolverine released on PS5 - scores below expectations: Metacritic 77
On September 15, the PlayStation 5 released one of the most anticipated exclusives of the year - Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games. The project is available for $69.99, but the first ratings from critics turned out to be noticeably more modest than predicted: on Metacritic the game is at 77 , and OpenCritic shows 78 with approximately the same number of reviews.
For any other studio, such a result would be a success, but for Insomniac this is the weakest result since 2016, since Song of the Deep. For comparison, Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) has 87 points, Miles Morales has 85, and Spider-Man 2 has 90. Moreover, Wolverine became the lowest-rated PlayStation Studios game of the entire PS5 era, behind even Sackboy: A Big Adventure (79).
What the critics say
Reviewers unanimously praise the brutal and spectacular combat system, first-class animation and the work of the actors - especially the performer of the role of Logan, Liam McIntyre. The main complaints come down to the structure: the game takes place in linear corridor locations without an open world, the combat quickly becomes monotonous, and many call the plot disappointing.
- IGN, GameSpot, GamesRadar+ - 6/10 each;
- Giant Bomb - 5/10, lowest rating so far;
- lesser-known publications generally give 8–9 points, which keeps the average score at the “generally positive” level.
The campaign is designed to last approximately 12–15 hours, and the full completion with the Platinum trophy takes about 22 hours. On the day of release, a patch was released with New Game Plus, mission replay mode and photo mode. Installation requires about 79 GB, the game supports PS5 Pro with PSSR, there are no versions for PS4, PC and Xbox and, judging by Sony's decision to keep story-based projects on PlayStation, no plans are in the offing.
