Bungie has moved the third season of Marathon to December 8th, with the Symbiosis update coming out in October instead.

Bungie has officially announced the postponement of the third season of Marathon. The Extraction shooter, which launched in March 2026, was supposed to receive a new season on September 22, but the studio moved the date to December 8, 2026. The reason, according to the developers, is the desire to give the season more time to polish while changing the rhythm of the game's support.

Instead of the usual seasonal change, a major content update for Symbiosis will be released in October. Its release is scheduled for October 6, 2026, and it will add new PvE content to the game - an activity designed for cooperative play with elements of global progression. For players tired of constant PvP survival, this is the first major expansion of the cooperative part of Marathon.

Abandoning the rigid seasonal model

According to Bungie representatives, the team is moving away from a strict seasonal model, when content was released on a strict schedule regardless of readiness. Now the rhythm of updates will be more flexible: content packs like Symbiosis will be released between seasons, and the seasons themselves will have more time to develop.

The third season, when it does start in December, will bring an updated Perimeter location with a redesigned event system, a new shell suit, a new PvE direction and weapons. Considering the decline in activity after the initial rush, what is expected from the new season is the return of the lost audience - and the postponement in this light looks like a reasonable bet on quality.
