Gamescom 2026: full show schedule, biggest announcements and where to watch

From August 25 to 30, Cologne hosts gamescom 2026 — the biggest gaming exhibition on the planet and the industry's main gathering point in the second half of the year. This is where publishers showcase autumn releases and announce next year's projects. Here is every show and presentation on the schedule, what's already confirmed, and how to watch the streams.

Gamescom 2026 — the world's biggest gaming expo in Cologne

What is gamescom and why it matters

Gamescom brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to Cologne every year — it is the largest gaming event in the world by attendance, having surpassed even E3 in its best years. The expo fills the giant Koelnmesse complex: publishers build entire halls with playable zones, developers hold closed-door press demos, and viewers worldwide follow the online broadcasts.

For players, the heart of gamescom is not the show floor but the showcases tied to it. After E3 was cancelled for good, Cologne week became the industry's "second June": Summer Game Fest kicks off the announcement season, and gamescom closes the yearly cycle in late August, right before the autumn release window. This is where publishers traditionally show gameplay of games shipping in autumn and winter, reveal release dates and drop surprise announcements.

In 2026 the expo lands in an especially hot period: this autumn the industry awaits GTA 6 — the biggest game of the decade — while Nintendo is gaining momentum with Switch 2. Expect final gameplay showings of autumn blockbusters and the first announcements of 2027 projects.

Opening Night Live: what's confirmed

The Opening Night Live (ONL) opening ceremony kicks off on August 25 at 20:00 CEST with a half-hour pre-show. This year the hosts are the show's permanent producer Geoff Keighley and presenter Eefje "sjokz" Depoortere. The format is familiar: a rapid-fire sequence of world premieres, gameplay demos and announcements — usually two to three dozen projects in a single evening.

Two major participants are officially confirmed. First, Final Fantasy VII Revelation — the third part of Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII remake project. Game director Naoki Hamaguchi is attending the show in person, so expect more than a short teaser: a full trailer, story details and possibly a release date. Part two, Rebirth, shipped in 2024, and fans are eager for news about the finale of Cloud and Sephiroth's story.

Second, ONL will feature The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past, a story expansion for the legendary third Witcher game. A full-scale DLC for an eleven-year-old title is an event in itself: CD Projekt RED returns to Geralt while working on the series' fourth installment. Almost nothing is known about the expansion's content yet, so the gamescom showing will be the first detailed look at the project.

Xbox Broadcast: 25 years of Xbox and Fable

On August 26 at 16:00 CEST Microsoft runs its own broadcast from Cologne. The occasion is special: the Xbox brand turns 25 in 2026, and the company promises to "celebrate 25 years of play" by showcasing its biggest upcoming projects for Xbox Series X|S.

The headline title is Fable — the reboot of the cult fairy-tale RPG from Playground Games, the makers of Forza Horizon. The game has been in development for years, and every showing is an event: judging by Microsoft's statements, Cologne will get an extended gameplay demonstration. Besides Fable, the stream promises trailers, gameplay clips, developer interviews and "special guests". Xbox traditionally uses gamescom for Game Pass announcements, so subscribers should pay extra attention.

Future Games Show and show-floor coverage

On the evening of August 26, at 19:00 CEST, the Future Games Show begins — a 90-minute GamesRadar showcase with world premieres, demo drops and exclusive trailers. It will be hosted by Resident Evil Requiem actors Nick Apostolides (Leon Kennedy) and Angela Sant'Albano (Grace Ashcroft) — itself a hint that Capcom's new horror game will get plenty of attention. Right after FGS, the team goes live from the show floor: booth reports, developer interviews and additional premieres.

A bit of history: how gamescom became the world's top expo

Gamescom has run in Cologne since 2009, growing out of Leipzig's Games Convention. Over a decade and a half it became the planet's most attended gaming event: in peak years it drew over 350,000 visitors across more than 200,000 square meters of exhibition space. After Los Angeles' E3 closed for good in 2023, the Cologne expo remained the only event of this scale open to the public.

Gamescom's format is unique in combining two worlds. For regular visitors it's a giant festival: queues at game booths, cosplay contests, concerts, retro zones and merch. For the industry it's a business venue: the devcom developer conference runs in parallel, and behind closed doors publishers sign deals and show press embargoed projects. That's why gamescom news flows all week — what journalists see behind closed doors often becomes public announcements within days.

What else to expect from gamescom 2026

Beyond the confirmed projects, gamescom week should bring news about the year's autumn releases: Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2, Star Wars Zero Company and Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition for Switch 2 ship in late August, EA Sports FC 27 in September, and Rayman Legends Retold and Star Wars: Galactic Racer in October. A separate intrigue: will one of the shows feature GTA 6's third trailer? The game launches November 19 — less than three months away — and Rockstar has just entered the active phase of its marketing campaign. Nothing is promised, but Cologne week is the perfect stage for such a premiere.

As usual, some announcements will happen outside the main shows: publishers love dropping trailers and press releases during expo week to ride the heightened attention. We'll be following the events and publishing the biggest gamescom 2026 news — bookmark the site.
