Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — Beginner's Guide: Open World, Synergy and Bonds
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth — A Beginner's Guide
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second installment in the remake trilogy: the party leaves Midgar and ventures into a vast open world. The pursuit of Sephiroth takes you through the green valleys of Grassland, the resort town of Costa del Sol, the cosmopolitan Gold Saucer, and the Temples of the Ancients. The game is significantly larger in scale than the first installment—and this guide will help you navigate its many features without getting overwhelmed.
Tifa, Aerith, and the whole family
Rebirth is the most “team-oriented” installment: your party can include up to seven heroes at once, and the game constantly features scenes where they interact. Tifa emerges here as the emotional center of the group—her storyline with Cloud includes some of the trilogy’s most tender moments. Aerith gradually embraces her role as the last of the Ancients, and her magical potential in battle has increased many times over. They’re joined by Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, and the Cait Companions—and each has their own “synergy” system with the others.
A particular highlight of Rebirth is the relationship system. Dialogues, completed quests, and chosen responses increase Cloud’s bond with each party member, and it’s this bond that determines who will be your date for the famous date at Gold Saucer. Whether you want a romantic Ferris wheel ride with Tifa or a tender evening with Aerith—make sure to complete their personal quests first.
Open World: How Not to Get Lost
Every region is packed with activities: data towers, Saved Matter crystals, hunting rare monsters, and the “Queen’s Blood” card game. Tips on pacing:
- Start with Chocobos and towers. Tame the region’s Chocobo and activate the towers—the map will clear itself.
- Quests marked with a character’s icon are a must. They grant affinity points and powerful synergy abilities.
- Don’t worry about 100% region completion. After Chapter 12, you’ll be able to freely return anywhere—and use fast travel.
- Play “Blood of the Queen.” The card mini-game is deep, and rare cards are a real boon for collectors.
Combat: Synergy Is Key
The classic ATB system has been expanded with paired synergy abilities—joint moves between two heroes featuring spectacular animations. They cost no ATB and become more powerful as your relationship grows. Develop each hero’s weapon “portfolio,” unlock new synergy branches, and don’t forget to switch up your party: bosses often require specific elements and roles. Yuffie, with her elemental shuriken, is a versatile answer to the weaknesses of nearly any enemy.
Quick Tips Before You Start
- Transfer your save from the Remake—you’ll get the Leviathan and Ramuh summons right away.
- Always carry the Appraisal Materia and analyze bosses before a serious battle.
- Craft items via the “Crafting Station”—transmutation saves a ton of gil.
- The date in Gold-Sore is set in Chapter 12—keep an eye on your relationship stats ahead of time.
- The final chapter is long and intense: stock up on Ether and set aside plenty of time.
Rebirth is a rare RPG where the world, characters, and systems come together as a cohesive whole. If you enjoyed the Remake, you’ll love the second installment even more—and the ending will leave you eagerly awaiting the third.
