Patch 7.41 for Dota 2 and the #MDGA riot: why players bombed reviews and what really changed (2026
Information is current as of August 2026.
Patch 7.41 (March 24, 2026) became the most talked about event of the year in Dota 2: Valve for the first time in a decade removed more mechanics from the game than it added - mainly by completely removing Facets in just one line in the patch notes, without explanation. The response was a campaign of negative reviews on Steam with the hashtag #MDGA (“Make Dota Great Again”), due to which recent reviews of the game temporarily dropped to “mixed”. Let's figure out what happened and who was right in the end.
What preceded the patch: a riot of reviews
In the winter of 2025–2026, the community was in full swing: there were no content updates for a long time, players were tired of “repetitive patches that don’t change anything,” and a wave of negative reviews began on Steam with the hashtag #MDGA - “make Dota great again.” Patch 7.41 came out shortly after this - and it turned out to be as radical as possible: a big “spring cleaning” of the mechanics. Added drama and surprise: the patch fell right in the middle of the ESL One Birmingham 2026 tournament, and esports athletes had to relearn on the fly.
The main changes of patch 7.41
- Aspects have been completely removed. The 2024 mechanic that gave each hero a choice of specialization before the match disappeared in one line of patch notes. Some bonuses were distributed to basic abilities, items and talents.
- Natural abilities no longer depend on the level of other skills: now they give fixed bonuses or scale with the hero’s level.
- The map has been redrawn: The point of the first appearance of the Tormentor and its faults have been changed, the lotus ponds have been moved to the towers of the complex line, the ancient camps are closer to the bases, the trees on the branches have been cut down.
- Creep timings: the first additional catapult is at the 30th minute instead of the 35th, after the 60th another one comes out; light lane creeps speed up, hard lane creeps slow down.
- Eight new items - from cheap Splintmail (+7 armor) to anti-tank Specialist’s Array and barrier Consecrated Wraps.
- Neutral items without RNG: The enchantment system has become completely deterministic - supports are finally guaranteed to receive the necessary bonuses.
- The characteristics and abilities of almost all heroes have been changed; An icon of the hero’s current parameters has appeared in the interface.
